Retail Trends - Tendências do Varejo

Although I kept up with the NRF here in Brazil for 12 years, this was the first year I could stand by it in NYC.

Of all the topics covered, the main message of the event, iI would highlight, was the re-invention of retail, promoting the best consumer experience, innovating and seeking the connection in a disruptive way, seeking empathy with the consumer.

Therefore, the role of leadership in driving values across the team and infecting all consumers is essential to bring brand purpose and engagement.

I particularly recognize myself with the inclusion speech, valuing the diversity of Ikea CEO Lars Peterson and Levi's, Chip Bergh.

Digital transformation is not a promise but an ongoing process and in all areas, highlighting the operational area, optimizing processes and reducing friction. For this to happen, the retailer must intelligently appropriate Big Data. Highlight for the trails built in the stands of Google and Microsoft.

And with all this, the physical retail has its place guaranteeing, being the focal point of experience stage.

On the final day of the event, the highlight was the futuristic vision of China's largest retailer, JD, and its logistics solutions including strategic distribution of highly technological CDs and deliveries with drones. I include here a video with an overview of the JD.

I also highlight the Brazilian case of Drogaria Araújo using machine learning and big data to leverage decisions about pricing and promotion.

The numbers of the event impressed: + 36 thousand professionals in the retail sector, + 16 thousand retailers from 99 different countries. I would like to stress the great presence of Brazilians: in all we were more than 1700 Brazilians, one of the largest foreign delegations participating in the event.

Of the new Manhattan novelties that translate this spirit, I highlight the new Nike store on 5th Avenue (House of Innovation) and Starbucks Reserve Roastery on 61 9th Ave, almost across from Google.

The mission is to translate learning into sustainable business practices in a challenging time for the economy and society at large.

With the restarting of economic growth in Brazil, many retail chains are preparing themselves to return to grow. The largest franchise fair in Brazil has happened last July, but if the retail chains do not do their part and work in a win-win relationship with their franchisees, growth is not sustainable and lasting. I truly understand that the top 5 challenges in the development of retail networks are the following:

#1. Strategic planning: the expansion team and its stakeholders are aligned on strategic issues such as: who is your target audience, who are your competitors and where they are, how many stores fit in your market, what is the main expansion strategy and what kind of stores are the best for expansion?

#2. Choose the best and most suitable locations: in the last decade brands that grew only in shopping centers felt safe in the market specially because shopping mall industry expanded in the same period in Brazil, but today we must be more assertive in estimating the sales of future stores in order to correctly dimension the investment.

#3.Build a strong and healthy pipeline of new opening stores: this means knowing how to choose and negotiate the best sites and the best franchisees; correctly managing the physical-financial plan of the openings from the site analysis, through hiring and training employees and obtaining of any operating licenses.

#4. Structure adequate processes to engage the entire company in the consistent and continuous rate and seedy of growth, creating a real commitment and culture of expansion in the whole company, from the area of purchases, IT, HR, Marketing, besides the Operations and Franchises team that will truly support growth when they believe everyone would win with it.

#5.Find the right partners to support the pace of expansion: Of course, you'll be able to do site analysis, but will you be able to do it with the speed you need for the best deals? What about IT partners for POS, CRM, analytics, internet link, means of payment? And suppliers for architecture studies, furniture, construction and licenses?

Does it make sense to you? Let's talk about it!

Is it really the death of shopping malls? What does the largest mall on the planet teach us?

On my recent trip to Dubai, I was surprised by the Dubai Mall.

The shopping mall is recent: it was first opened  in 2008.
I Have already Known that it was the biggest mall in the world, but personally it is even more impressive than the numbers: more than 1,200 stores and more than 500 thousand m2 of GLA (Gross Leasable Area). But the record is in built area: 1,124,000m2. There are 80 million visitors annually. And this number only grows.

What I saw was a luxury retail, but also a diverse and vibrant retail, very different from the apocalyptic predictions that foresee the end of physical retail, especially the traditional North American shopping malls. The mall manages to stay open until midnight every day, and even in some periods (eg special sales, such as the one I could observe, post Ramadan), stay opened until 2 a.m.! Crowded of consumers.

Many luxury brands I did not know escape from the Paris-New York axis and focus only on the Eastern market: Dubai, Singapore and Abu Dhabi, for example. In addition to the traditional ones, of course, as for example the Galleries Lafayette.

The mall is full of entertainment options: in addition to the traditional cinema and a amusement park like Kidzania, it has special attractions such as an enormous aquarium, an Olympic size ice skating rink and even a performative daily show with a gigantic light source even more interesting than the traditional Las Vegas western show in my personal opinion. The scales and proportions are always monumental.
The venture is the Emmar Group, a company founded in 1997 of real estate development currently valued at more than US $ 9.7 billion.

What would be the secret of success?

Qual seria o segredo do sucesso?
